Random Viewing: Let Me In

Hello viewers, this is Ninja101 here with a segment that I am going to call "Random Viewings". This is basically a post I will make because I just happened to come across a movie that I wanted to share with you guys.

This Random Viewing was the film called Let Me In, a horror/drama film released in 2010, directed and written by Matt Reeves. It is actually a remake of a Swedish film called Let the Right One In, released in 2008(which is based on the novel of the same name, released in 2004). This film takes place in the 1980's and is about a young boy named Owen(played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) who unknowingly befriends a vampire who actually looks like a 12 year old girl, named Abby(played by Chloe Moretz...HIT GIRL). Sounds kind of like a puppy love version of Twilight, right? This film is actually what Twilight should have been.

The directing in this film is actually pretty darn good. The flow of the film is solid, there are not too many points in the film where you feel bored or zoned out. There are also many points of suspense and gore that will keep you interested in the film. The relationships between characters was also well done. It is the main draw of the film actually. To actually see how this relationship between the vampire and the boy progresses is interesting. The character development could have been better though. Sadly there are not many important characters to begin with and the main focus of the film is only on two of them. But if you are a person that pays close attention to the film you are watching, you will be rewarded with little bits of back story for some of the characters that help make the environment of the film feel more full to you.

The acting is what you can expect from decent child actors. The children come off as genuine children. Not stereotypical children. The adult actors (Richard Jenkins and Elias Koteas - Casey Jones from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie) also did very well with the limited characters that they were given. Their characters were a little under developed and some were developed too late.

One thing that boggled me was the choice in time era. Why the 1980's? It could have been any other time. Don't get me wrong though, I have nothing against the 1980's(heck I was born in there). I did appreciate the director making the effort to make it actually look like the 1980's. Even the character's hair cuts were from the time era. Alas, this film, if it was supposed to be scary, was not made scarier because of the time period. A film like Super 8(which I will review) had to take place in the time period that it was set in. It simply would not work. But Let Me In seems like it would be just as good in the year 2040 as it was in the 1980's.

I can't forget about the gore and "special effects". The gore is not disgusting but tasteful. It has just the right amount for this kind of movie. But the "special effects" on the other hand are pretty poor. Fast Forwarding some one climbing a tree does not make it look amazing, it makes it look cheesy...But this set back does not upset the whole movie. It will make you smirk if anything at all.

All in all, with the bad and the good, I liked this movie. I would probably watch it again if I happen to pass by it on TV while eating dinner or something. But I would not buy this on dvd or blu ray. So if you are interested in vampire/human relations, check this one out.

SPOILER: The ending is a lil farfetched. Just take it as it is or else it will ruin the film for you!
